Official fraternity recordHistory & archive

The fraternity’s approved founding record places its beginning at The Ohio State University on January 1, 1905. Contemporary reporting surviving from 1906 documents an organization of eleven Black students with national ambitions.
The historical archive remains incomplete. This site distinguishes fraternity-approved history from contemporary evidence and from questions that still require research. Where the record is silent, we say so.
Black collegiate fraternity history
Ohio State University Archives reports that its staff located a January 10, 1906 issue of The Lantern announcing Pi Gamma Omicron and naming its founders. That independent record supports ΠΓΟ’s place among the earliest documented Black collegiate fraternities in the United States.
The wording is deliberate: the surviving evidence establishes historical significance, while an incomplete archive does not justify claims beyond what the record can prove. Historical origin at Ohio State does not imply present-day university sponsorship, recognition, or endorsement.
